Understand the tradeoffs

A policy is more than
its illustration.

IUL is permanent life insurance with a death benefit and cash value. Indexed interest is calculated using a formula linked to an external index. Your policy does not invest directly in that index.

01 / THE BASICS

How indexed universal life works

Read the short explainer

IUL combines a life insurance death benefit with cash value. After policy deductions, eligible value can receive interest under an index-linked formula. You do not invest directly in the index. Caps limit credited interest; participation rates determine how much of an index change is used. These terms may change within contractual limits. Premium flexibility does not mean funding is optional: inadequate premiums and ongoing charges can exhaust value and cause a policy to lapse. Review both guaranteed values and nonguaranteed illustrations with a licensed professional, and revisit funding as your circumstances change.

02 / THE CHECKLIST

Compare policies, not promises

Read the short explainer

Compare illustrations using the same age, coverage, premium schedule, and funding assumptions. Separate contractual guarantees from illustrated outcomes; an illustration is not a prediction. Review insurance and administrative charges, surrender schedules, riders, index-account charges, adjustable caps and participation rates, and loan provisions. Ask how the policy performs with lower credited interest and higher allowable charges. Review insurer financial strength using current rating-agency information and your state insurance department, not an unsupported best-company ranking. Availability and underwriting vary by product and state.

03 / YOUR OPTIONS

IUL vs. whole life: what changes?

Read the short explainer

Whole life typically provides contractual premiums, a guaranteed death benefit, and a guaranteed cash-value schedule when required premiums are paid. Participating policies may pay dividends, but dividends are not guaranteed. IUL generally offers more flexible premiums and index-linked crediting, with ongoing charges and funding requirements. Both are long-term insurance contracts, not direct stock-market investments. Policy loans accrue interest and can reduce available value and death benefits; insufficient funding or excessive borrowing can contribute to lapse. Term insurance may be a more suitable way to meet temporary coverage needs. Neither permanent policy type is universally best.

IUL Starter Guide — accessible web overview

1. Start with the need. Permanent insurance may suit a long-term death-benefit need and a budget that can sustain the policy. Compare term coverage before committing.

2. Understand the formula. Indexed accounts use contractual crediting formulas. Floors are not guarantees against declining net value. Review caps, participation rates, and every applicable charge.

3. Plan funding and access. Cash access depends on the contract and available value. Loans accrue interest. Inadequate funding and excessive loans can cause lapse. Tax treatment depends on circumstances, including MEC status and outstanding loans.

4. Ask before signing. What is guaranteed? What can change? What happens with lower interest crediting? How long do surrender charges apply? How will the policy be reviewed? Illustrations are not predictions.

A few important answers.

What is IUL?

Indexed universal life is permanent life insurance with a death benefit and cash value. Interest on indexed accounts follows a contractual formula linked to an external index, rather than direct investment in that index.

Does a 0% floor mean my cash value cannot decrease?

No. An indexed interest floor applies to the crediting calculation. Insurance charges, administrative costs, loans, and other deductions can still reduce net policy value.

When can I access cash value?

Access depends on available value and the contract, not a universal waiting period. Surrender charges may apply. Loans accrue interest, reduce available value and death benefits, and can contribute to lapse. MEC status, withdrawals, or surrender or lapse with outstanding loans can have tax consequences; consult a qualified tax professional.

How is IUL different from whole life?

Whole life generally has contractual premiums and guaranteed cash-value development. IUL uses adjustable index-linked crediting and flexible premiums subject to sufficient funding. Whole-life dividends and IUL illustrated results are not guaranteed.

Is this an insurance application?

No. A personal review request starts an educational conversation about needs, budget, and options. It is not an instant quote, underwriting decision, investment recommendation, or promise of coverage.

What happens after I submit?

Once review requests are enabled, the intended process is to deliver the guide and have Steven “Jib” Hunt follow up by email or manual phone call. This draft does not collect or transmit personal information; service availability and the private delivery workflow must be confirmed first.
